Ask HN: I feel both valuable and worthless
Sorry if this is trite, but I'm looking for life advice. Right now, I'm not making much money, and that needs to change relatively soon. For the past few years I've been applying to programming jobs, but I just can't get any interviews. I'm guessing this is because I don't have formal education nor do I have relevant work experience. If there was a cookie cutter for Joe Developer, I just don't fit.My second thought was to start a company/side hustle of my o
Show HN: Mobile-Friendly Arithmetic Trainer
~20 years ago, HN user sophiebits made a nice arithmetic trainer: https://arithmetic.zetamac.com/ (discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1728309)I think it's great, but my 7yo son doesn't want to use it every day, because the countdown timer creates unnecessary pressure.I thought about sticking a piece of masking tape on the iPad screen to cover the countdown timer, but my son didn't like that idea.So I built something similar, but with
Ask HN: How to start a CDN company? Egress is expensive
Every cloud offers cheap compute, but expensive egress. And it becomes more expensive in some regions.
Here are some stats for Asia Pacific region:
1. AWS: 0.12 USD per GB
2. Azure: 0.11 USD per GB
3. Google Cloud: 0.11 USD per GB
4. Oracle: 0.025 USD per GB (cheapest one among the large companies)
5. IBM Cloud: Could not figure out.
Linode (Akamai) offers 0.005 USD per GB.
With these prices in place, how do CDN companies work? Where can I get cheap bandwidth?
Ask HN: Tips and Are there any job prospects in malware reverse engineering?
Hello HN,
I'm a dev studying in my free-time security and malware reverse engineering mainly because I think it's an interesting subject, and so I was wondering,
if I wanted to make it my main job, do you have tips to go about it and is there demand for it ?
Would you recommend some kind of RE certification, or maybe I should start writing a blog about it and try to use that as leverage for interviews ?
Ask HN: Why/when do you downvote?
I find places with moderators and/or downvote schemes (HN, Reddit, Discord) extremely difficult to understand and survive long-term. I've deleted multiple accounts across platforms like these in the last 10+ years, and hilariously in most cases I'll delete it after only a single downvote or disagreement. To me, getting downvoted is like the Internet version of being disrespected publicly at a place and it makes me never want to go there again. Because everyone saw how wrong I was
Ask HN: Comments requesting paywall bypass links
I frequently see comments from people explicitly or implicitly asking for links to bypass paywalls on submitted articles. I'm confused by this, since it takes about the same amount of effort to generate your own paywall bypassing link as it does to post a comment asking for someone else to do it. Going beyond and posting this newly generated link for others to use does add a step, but doesn't seem like a lot to ask. What's happening here?Do these posters think some special magic

Show HN: A self-published art book about Google's first 25 years
This took me 3 years to finish. (It is 100% self-published, not endorsed by Google.)So… I wrote a book. It’s a different book with a unique approach. It’s not a novel or a technical book. It’s a biography, a company’s biography. My hope is that it serves two purposes: to inspire founders and to captivate interior designers. It all started three years ago. My wife and I were discussing interior design for our living room and she brought up what beautiful coffee table books should we have. After lo

How much of your standard MacBook keyboard's area are you actually utilising? Do you know?Keys that I honestly never use on my Mac:- Globe fn key (it's just too inconvenient to press)- caps lock (I PREFER NOT TO SCREAM WHEN I TYPE)- F3 - show all windows (I use gestures)- F4 - spotlight (I use command + space)- F5 - dictation- F6 - I have no idea what the moon icon means and what it does.- F7 - rewind (Idk, I just never press it)- right option- right command- right shiftEach key has a
Show HN: Design Engineer dot io – beautiful job board for design engineers
Hey HN,Excited to launch a new side project today. After leaving my startup at the end of the year, I wanted to hack on something with all the cool kid tools out there like React Server Components, Supabase, Tailwind, etc.Over the last month there's been a groundswell of opinions (particularly on Twitter/X) around this "new" role of "Design Engineer" with lots of companies now hiring for it. It's still the early days so not everyone has adopted the term but thi
Show HN: An app that takes your money if you don't reach your goals
My wife and I just launched this app because we had so much fun with a fitness challenge we did we some friends recently where everyone put in $100 and defined their goals, then only the people who met their goals split the pot. It made us realize there's really no better motivator than money. It's better on mobile screens right now as we just designed for mobile screens for now. And we did manage to put it up on both app stores - it's low in the ranks but you should be able to sea

Show HN: A minimal Chinese learning site
This is a non-AI Chinese learning app I started working on before ChatGPT. Now that LLMs are near-perfect translators, this non-AI approach is clearly not the global optimum, so I figured I might as well put it out before its utility hits 0.I made this to help myself speak Chinese to my parents. Great tools already existed for learning to _read_ Chinese, but I was unable to find anything designed to help you produce your own grammatically correct Chinese sentences. As any 2nd gen knows, the abil
